Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Saturday 12th March was our last day in Brisbane, so Will and I caught a bus out to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. We had pre-bought our tickets from the YHA itself, which gave us a discount of $8 per ticket. As most of you know, I do like my bargains!
Our first impressions were that Australian animals seem to spend the majority of their time sleeping! Maybe it is something to do with the Brisbane heat... Above and below are some very laid-back Tasmanian Devils. The handlers regularly take the dingoes out for walks and I got to pat this one below.
My favourite part of most zoos I visit is the falconry show. I love seeing the owls and other raptors in action. This barn owl was absolutely gorgeous.
The star of the show was this barking owl who put on an incredible display of soundless flight.
He was rewarded for his efforts by a treat which he managed to quickly demolish...
There was also a majestic sea eagle on display which was an awesome sight to see in full flight.
Another highlight was the wallaby and kangaroo enclosure where the animals free-ranged and you could hand feed them with pellets.
However, the main attraction were the koalas, and we certainly got our fill! They are just so cute, even if they really don't do much except hang out, sleep (for 20 hours a day!) and eat eucalyptus leaves... These are just a few of the numerous photos we took!
We decided to pay the extra and get the 'koala cuddling' photo, as who knows when we'd ever get a chance again... We got Spoon, an old gentleman. He was SO soft and fuzzy, it was a brilliant experience!
That was a fantastic way to finish our time in Brisbane. On Sunday 13th March we flew to Canberra for the next leg of our adventure.
