Snow!
Gidday,
Gidday,
Gidday,
We were up at 4am on Wednesday, ready to be picked up at 5 for the fishing. It was a glorious morning, although the sea was a bit choppy. It was too rough to launch at the ramp that Colin normally uses so we went a bit further around the coast where it was more sheltered. Unfortunately the fishing was rather poor, Will & dad caught some under-size snapper that we had to throw back, & dad also managed to haul in a small shark. The highlight of the day was a large pod of dolphins who turned up for bit of a play. It really was magical, they were darting all around the boat, ducking in & out of the wake. They are beautiful creatures. Unfortunately the fish were just starting to bite when we had to call it a day. A small matter of having a plane back to the UK to catch! The flight back went well, all 24 hours of it... We slept a lot more on the way back than we did on the trip over, so that was good. Leaving at 11pm helped, not to mention the fact we had been up since 4am! I really enjoy flying Air New Zealand, it was a very comfortable flight with excellent food & good service. We had a fantastic holiday, I can't quite believe the amount we managed to pack into our time there. It was lovely to catch up with everybody that I did see, & big apologies to those that I didn't... It was always going to be impossible seeing everyone that I wanted to.
After a very smooth ferry crossing, we arrived back in Wellington on Friday & stayed the night with my newly wed sister & her husband. Of course we felt obliged to help clean up some of the left-over wedding wine... On Saturday it was a big trip all the way back to Hamilton, via Napier to meet up with Trudy, a friend of mine from primary school. She & her husband have a very cute 17 month old & I was even persuaded to hold him for a bit! Never the less, it was a relief to hand him back to mum... A very pleasant New Year's Eve was held at my uncle & auntie's place down the road from mum & dad's. My very cool cousin Andrea was also there, so it was good to catch up as we haven't seen much of each other over the last 5 years.
It was a rather memorable start to the year as earlier in the evening Will proposed... & I of course said yes... He asked me in the Hamilton gardens, which is one of my favourite places in Hamilton. He got down on one knee in the English flower garden, which was quite appropriate, & rather romantic really... He even managed to time it for when lots of white doves were hanging around! We managed a pretty passable self-timer portrait to mark the occasion.New Year's Day was spent catching up with friends in the Tauranga/Mt Maunganui area. It really was lovely to see people, & of course show off the ring... It was an excellent day. Today was also all about catching up with people, it was pretty much a steady stream of people through the house. Apologies to those who I didn't manage to see, it was always going to be impossible catching up with everyone. I can't quite believe we are flying back to the UK tomorrow. Luckily we are flying late in the evening, & to make sure we make the most of every minute over here, we've arranged to go fishing at 5am! For those that know Wayne, I still keep in touch with his family, & his dad Colin has a boat & is taking us fishing in the Firth of Thames. Will is pretty excited about it, so hopefully we'll catch lots of snapper. Last time I went out with Colin we caught our quota of 9 each in 2 hours!
We had a lovely Christmas day with Mat & Ro & their 4 children. Cheers guys if you happen to be reading this! Along with Rich & Rach & their 2 kids, plus Mat's mum & dad, it definitely was a 'real' family Christmas. The Taieri River runs through their farm so early evening we went down for a spot of fishing. We didn't catch anything, but it was still good fun. Rich was determined not to miss any of the action, gammy ankle & all!
On Boxing day we drove to Christchurch, via a stop at the Moeraki boulders. Christchurch was cool, I caught up with my friend Rose who I used to play rugby with at Reading. Her & her husband have immigrated to NZ & have been here a couple of years now. Will & I had a lovely fish & chip meal on Sumner Beach. Christchurch appeals as a destination when I eventually return to NZ. I love the idea of the beach 15 minutes or so away, & mountains also close by.
On the 27th we drove to Kaikoura for the night. This was memorable for a very very nice meal of huge NZ mussels washed down by a lovely Marlborough Sauv Blanc.
If we thought that meal was impressive, it wasn't a patch on Nelson the following night. We ordered an incredible seafood platter which had fish bites, mussels, scallops, calamari, king prawns, smoked salmon, cheeses, an antipasto selection, & a loaf of warm Ciabatta. We basically stuffed ourselves silly for less then the price of an ordinary pub meal in the UK!
The following day it was back over the Cook Strait & back to the North Island...
